The British Jewry Book of Honour 1922 (reprinted 1997) p.126, has him as
27193 Pte D.SMOLLEN, 7th Training Reserve Battalion, died 28 September 1917, address 227 Newport Road, Middlesbrough. In this book he is not listed in the Nominal Roll of the East Yorkshire Regiment (pp.202-3) but he is listed in the Nominal Roll of the Training Reserve Battalions. On page 412 he is listed as 21793 Pte D. SMOLLAN, 5th battalion. [This would agree with his SDGW number, TR5/27193]

There is confirmation of his family's existence in Middlesbrough. Isaac SMOLLEN was a committee member of the Midlesbrough Jewish community in 1873. Source: Lewis Olsover, The Jewish communities of North-east England,1981, p.311.

In WWII three brothers named SMOLLAN were KIA.

Should anyone discover an error in a Commission record, they will be asked to provide the Commission with documentary evidence proving such (depending on the nature of the error). The Commission then contacts the relevant service authority asking for official confirmation. Once received and the error is confirmed, the record is amended accordingly.

PO/894/S Pte. Samuel LANDEY. RMLI. RM Cyclists Coy., R.N.Div. Died of Disease 16/10/15 at Imbros. Was listed as: "Portsmouth Bn., RMLI."

12/1727 Pte. Cyril LEATHER. 13th Bn., York and Lancaster Regt. DOW 17/7/16. Surname was spelt "Leaher". Unfortunately during recent renovation work in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, the Commission replaced his Headstone (below left) with the same incorrect spelling, despite their computer records being correct. Another new Headstone (below right) has recently been laid with the correct spelling (on our prompting).

The addition of names to Memorials to the Missing.

Should a case of non-commemoration come to light and once eligibility for commemoration has been confirmed, the casualty's name would normally be added to the appropriate memorial to the Missing, either on the addenda panel, or if space is available, on their parent regiment/unit panel. It is known that on occasion the Commission has erected a special memorial headstone in a cemetery when it is thought highly likely that one of the unnamed burials contained there is that of the casualty in question. Such headstones would bear the inscription, "Believed To Be Buried In This Cemetery".

Each memorial commemorates the Missing from specific sectors and dates of the war. For example, Thiepval Memorial in France remembers soldiers and sailors of British and South African forces who died in the Somme sector from July 1915 up until 20th March 1918. Therefore it is important that commemoration is made in the correct place, determined by referencing the casualty's details with his units war diary, which gives a day by day & sometimes hour by hour account of its movements. A really quite simple task, but one which the Commission has managed to get wrong on at least one occasion; see Richard Ellison below.

Canadian RFC Officer

2nd Lieutenant Walter Gordon COUTTS. 28 Training Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. Killed whilst flying 2/12/17. Early in 2001, we put forward a suspected case of non-commemoration to the Department of Veterans Affairs in Canada, with regard to this Canadian Officer. Very recently we received notification telling us that the Commission has added his name to their register. It was a simple case of us providing his name, along with brief details via e-mail. The Department then completed further investigations on our behalf. Well done Canada !

112518 Spr. Richard ELLISON. 172nd Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers. KIA 14/2/16 in the Ypres salient. This man was notified to the Commission in the late 1980's. Unfortunately, the Commission have inscribed his name in error on the Arras Memorial to the Missing, when in fact it should have been placed on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, amongst those of his comrades who died on the same day: 112673 Spr. Percy William DIXON & 112863 Spr. Samuel SMITH both 172nd Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers. The Commission have also omitted "Tunnelling" in the man's unit designation.
