The following list of errors were discovered in the Commission's database by reference to original service records. Our particular field of research specialises in the Royal Naval Division during the Great War, which is why the greater part of this list contains errors relating to this unit. Many of the errors are repeated on their headstones or memorials.
A listing of corrections & additions accepted by the Commission can be viewed on the Amended Records page.
There are two basic causes of errors in the Commission's records:-
(Type 1): Errors made by the OCR computer scanning (Optical Character Recognition) of the Commission's registers in the early 1990's. The Commission's computer database is riddled with OCR problems, all of which can be easily rectified by reference to the original (hardcopy) register entries. The OCR technology was evidently not sufficiently advanced to accurately copy the Commission's registers. The result of this "disaster" is that a very high percentage of the computer database records are flawed. The Commission is well aware of this problem and has recently expanded its DVT (Data Verification Team) to begin this mammoth task.
(Type 2): Long-standing errors, which date back to the compilation of the IWGC registers in the 1920's. It is suspected that the next of kin supplied erroneous information to the IWGC in many cases, & they, not wishing to upset the families, merely accepted the information without question. These errors are by far the most difficult to rectify, as they require both documentary evidence & a good understanding of British Military history. Many errors can be seen to be logical, i.e. the Collingwood Bn. R.N. Div. did not arrive at Gallipoli until 30/5/15. Therefore, a man who died of wounds 7/5/15 aboard a hospital ship off Cape Helles, cannot possibly have been serving with the Collingwood Bn. (who were at Blandford Camp in Dorset on this date) and therefore must have been serving with another unit (see Fred Machen in the lists below).
The corrected record relative to the casualty is displayed in black text, with a description of the database error/omission in red text. All corrections are fully supported by original documentation. Historical notes for the guidance of the reader are provided at the head of each section.

Errors relating to the Royal Marines Labour Corps

Many records on the Commission's Internet database appear to have "lost" information. We have found a number of Royal Marines whose unit/Battalion has 'disappeared' from their record. These details are known to exist in the Commission's electronic records, but do not appear in the Internet version due to problems with confused data fields, a result of the original cemetery registers not following a standard 'field' type format (at present being corrected).
The following is a small sample of records which are now short of such information :-
CH/336/S Pte. James ARDIS. RMLI. Chatham Bn., R.N.Div. KIA 6/6/15. Now no mention of Chatham Bn. Helles Memorial, Turkey.
CH/11035 Pte. Sidney William Barratt BARKER. RMLI. Chatham Bn., R.N.Div. Died 28/10/14. Now no mention of Chatham Bn. Willesden New Cemetery, Middlesex, United Kingdom.

Temp.Lieut. Arthur Frederick HAYWARD. RM. Chatham Bn. RMLI, R.N. Div. DOW in Egypt 10/5/15. Formerly CH/10659 Sgt. Major RMLI. Served at Antwerp in 1914. Now no mention of Chatham Bn. RMLI. Chatby War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Errors in Commission records for RNVR service numbers
RNVR NUMBERING GUIDE
Many of the errors in the Commission's records are 'logical errors'; that is to say they can be easily identified with the aid of a little specialist knowledge.
The RNVR used a serial number system based upon their six home divisions:- London, Mersey, Clyde, Tyneside, Bristol and Sussex. The RNVR always began their number allocations simply, with No.1, No.2, No.3 and so on.
Pre-WW1 RNVR recruits were allocated to numbered 'Companies' of their home division (a man who enlisted pre-war into the London Division RNVR and joined the 1st Company, with the number 213, would receive the service number L1/213). The six RNVR divisions raised up to ten companies each (L10/220 = London 10th Company, No.220).
In late
1914 the six RNVR Divisions began their "War Fleet" recruitment. These
"War Fleet" men received a new numbering/lettering system which used
a "Z" suffix to the home division i.e. London Z, No.1166 = LZ/1166.
Two more "War Fleet" Divisions were founded in late 1914/early 1915:
Wales (WZ) & Palace (enlisted at Crystal Palace: PZ or ZP).
To complicate matters further, the RNVR accepted the transfer of 2400 recruits
from the newly formed "Kitchener's Army" for service with the Royal
Naval Division. These men received special numbers, which began with a 'K' (K.W,
K.X or K.P, with a very few men numbered Z.W or Z.X).
In May 1916 the RNVR began a new numbering system for their Army transfers intended
for the RND using the prefix "R" (beginning simply, as always, with
"R/1"). These men were mostly conscripts, but with a fair number of
volunteers or transfers from Army Territorial, Cyclists, Hussars & Yeomanry
units. The first "R" prefixed men did not join the RND in France until
after the Battle of the Ancre, in December 1916.
The RNVR also raised an "Anti-Aircraft Corps" and prefixed these "AA" ; a Motor Boat Section ("MB") and Mine Clearance Service ("MC").
Therefore, all wartime enlistment (Hostilities only) RNVR servicemen received one of the following prefixes:- LZ, MZ, CZ, TZ, BZ, SZ, WZ, PZ, KW, KX, KP, ZW, ZX, ZP, R, AA, MB or MC.
A lot of information can be drawn from a man's RNVR service number alone. His regional origin can be deduced from the Home Division letter prefix; as can his enlistment date from the number suffix, which also aids prediction of his WW1 campaign service (RND at Antwerp, Gallipoli and/or Western Front).
Examples:-
L3/2733
(enlisted July 1912, in London 3rd Company, No.2733,)
BZ/4526 (enlisted November 1915, in Bristol War Fleet, No.4526)
M7/207 (enlisted June 1913, in Mersey 7th Company, No.207)
KW/272
(transfer from 'Kitchener's Army' to RNVR 7th September 1914)
KP/191 (transfer from 'Kitchener's Army' to RNVR at Crystal Palace 10th Sept.
1914)
C1/2167 (enlisted August 1912, in Clyde 1st Company, No.2167)
PZ/1037 (enlisted January 1915, in War Fleet at Crystal Palace)
TZ/1909 (enlisted November 1914 in Tyneside War Fleet, No.1909)
S5/1 (July 1904 enlistment in Sussex 5th Company, No.1)
When all this is understood (with added enlistment date details), it is easy to spot errors in RNVR prefixes or numbers. The commonest and simplest being the absence of a Divisional prefix (i.e "Z/1909"). Also common, is the substitution of a 'Z' for a '2' or vice-versa. It is perfectly acceptable for the RNVR Divisional prefix to be abbreviated (as used on Commission headstones & in RNVR records of service).

NOTES ON HOWE & NELSON BATTALION DISBANDMENT 1918
The Howe & Nelson battalions of the 63rd (RN) Division were disbanded in early February 1918. Their surviving personnel were sent to reinforce the other battalions of their Division.
Therefore,
many listed as died whilst serving with either the Howe or Nelson Battalions
after February 1918 are in error. It will be noted that no errors occur for
those Howe Bn. men transferred to Anson, Drake, Hood, or 7th Entrenching Bns.
(unless they were transferred via attachment to 2/RM).
For an example of their true designation (the only man correctly recorded as
such by the Commission) see the Commission's record for R/1030 AB Charles Biggs
RNVR, which reads:- Died 24/3/18 Howe Bn. attached 1st RM Bn.
On the 29th
April 1918, the 2nd Royal Marine battalion was disbanded and its personnel transferred
to the 1st Royal Marine Battalion. The ex-Howe or Nelson Battalion RNVR men,
who were still serving with the two Marine
Battalions, were transferred to the remaining four RNVR battalions: Drake, Hood,
Hawke or Anson.

Errors in Commission records relating to the Deal Bn. RMLI
The Deal Bn. RMLI was formed in late September 1914 to replace the Royal Marine Artillery Bn. which was withdrawn from the RND. After service at Antwerp in October 1914, they left for the Dardanelles 28/2/15 and landed at ANZAC Beachhead, Gallipoli 29/4/15. After only a ten month existence, the battalion was amalgamated with the Chatham Bn. RMLI at Cape Helles, Gallipoli 27/7/15, to form the new 1st Royal Marine Bn.
Unlike the Plymouth, Portsmouth & Chatham Bns. RMLI, the Deal Bn. RMLI contained a mixture of Marines from all three RMLI Divisions. The other three RMLI Bns. contained Marines drawn (almost) exclusively from their own Division (i.e. Plymouth Marines (almost) only served in the Plymouth Bn.).

PLY/16866 Pte. Bertram James Andrew GIBSON. RMLI. Deal Bn., R.N.Div. KIA 1/5/15. Incorrectly recorded as Plymouth Bn. Error repeated on Headstone. This error is very easy to detect, as the Plymouth Battalion did not serve in the Anzac Sector at Gallipoli & Pte. Gibson is found in the 1914 Star medal roll as "Deal Bn." at Antwerp in Oct. 1914. Incorrectly recorded as SS/10611 (& RFR/PO/85680 on the internet database only). Errors repeated on the Headstone. Please note the use of the letter "I" instead of the number "1" in the service number on the Headstone. No self-respecting Stonemason would make this mistake. The new version of the CWGC database (Dec.2004) has corrected the scanning error which substituted "I" for "1" in countless records, but not in time to prevent the error spreading to Brewster's newly replaced Headstone. This well illustrates that the scanning errors in the Commission's computer database are currently being spread to newly replaced Headstones, cut by machines with faulty data.
